I honestly never thought that culottes would ever grace my wardrobe at 30 years of age. As an 80s/90s child, they were big back in the day, but as so with many other fashion fads they quickly fell out of favour. My culottes were eventually turfed off to the charity shop with printed lycra cycling shorts, white frilly socks, velvet hairbands and cord waistcoats.
This year, culottes are back but with an entirely new and more sophisticated look. It’s taken some time to warm to them, but now I feel very comfortable donning a pair of sleek, black culottes with a killer pair of heels and a cute crop top.
I was very fortunate to collaborate with Boohoo for this post, who kindly sent me this pair of culottes as part of their Style Squad campaign. If you don’t know anything about the recent upsurge in girl squads, then you must have been hiding under a rock or successfully ignoring all celebrity news and media trash of late. If you are amongst the latter, then I envy you, I simply don’t have the willpower.
After taking a short quiz, my style squad was revealed as ‘Sophisticated’. Boohoo dictates this as, ‘all about being a girlboss. Independent women who know what they like and wear it with confidence, they’re not afraid to try a midi dress or on-trend culottes. Matchy-matchy isn’t a faux pas; it’s a commandment with co-ords. Forget chiffon – this squad are slick in strapless dresses, and even their sandals have killer heels.’ I identify with elements of this definition, but I feel that my style can also be casual, glam and girly all at the same time. My style has evolved over the years and recently I’ve noticed that I’m reaching for more minimalist and grown up looks. From time to time, I still mix in a cute print or kitsch accessory here and there as I’m not quite ready to let go of those just yet.
I took these pics in the grounds of City Hall Belfast before dining out with my other half at the Cheeky Cherub italian restaurant. I think the whole look has a touch of Sex and the City about it and although Belfast isn’t exactly New York, it did serve as a nice little cosmopolitan backdrop to my photos.
